New Volvo V40 images leaked
(Wed, 22 Feb 2012 16:40:00 GMT)

The new Volvo V40 has been revealed ahead of its unveiling at the Geneva motor show next month.

Leaked images of the new model – which is expected to replace the S40 saloon and V50 estate – have appeared on various websites. The images – which appear to be genuine – show the five-door hatchback has a similar look to Volvo’s S60, V60 and XC60 models.

The V40 is expected to go on sale later this year and will give Volvo a much-needed rival to the Audi A3 Sportback, BMW 1 Series and VW Golf.

More details are expected to be released closer to the Geneva motor show.

Geneva 2012: Bugatti Grand Sport Vitesse
(Wed, 22 Feb 2012 12:40:00 GMT)

This is the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport Vitesse – a high-performance version of the Veyron Grand Sport open-top model that makes its public debut at the Geneva motor show 2012.

The Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport Vitesse is based on the Veyron Super Sport and has the same W16 engine. It has four turbochargers and produces a staggering 1184bhp and 1106lb ft of torque. The Grand Sport Vitesse’s top speed is likely to be only a fraction short of the Super Sport’s 268mph maximum.

Bugatti says there are chassis modifications to handle the power, but hasn’t released any further details.

There’s no word on production dates or prices, either, but the Grand Sport Vitesse is likely to cost at least £2,000,000.

More details will be revealed at the Geneva motor show next month.

New Euro NCAP test results released
(Wed, 22 Feb 2012 12:16:00 GMT)

Crash test results for the Honda Civic and Jeep Compass have been released by safety body Euro NCAP.

Honda's Civic received the maximum five-star rating, after scoring highly for adult occupant, child occupant, pedestrian and safety assist.

It was also given a Euro NCAP Advanced award for its Collision Mitigation Braking Assist system – a £1900 option with adaptive cruise control on top-spec EX GT models.

The Jeep Compass scored just two stars overall, with poor crash performance in the side pole test highlighted – despite being fitted with the standard thorax airbag. It scored just 23% on pedestrian safety, with the bonnet generally providing poor protection where an adult’s head might strike.

New test rules for 2012 mean cars have to score at least 80% in adult protection, 75% for child protection, and 60% for both pedestrian and safety assist to get five stars.

Reassessed cars get top marks
Various cars originally tested last year were reassessed, with the top five-star rating awarded to the following models:
BMW 1 Series
BMW X1
Ford Focus
Mercedes M-Class
Nissan Leaf
Subaru XV
Volvo V60.

1 in 6 cars on the road are write-offs
(Wed, 22 Feb 2012 11:57:00 GMT)

More than 17% of cars on the road have previously been written-off, according figures from vehicle-check site MyCarCheck.

The research looked at more than 46 million cars.

Of 46,456,106 cars checked, the research revealed 448,307 (17.37%) were previously classified as ‘Cat A’ – described as having suffered too extreme damage to be repaired and should not be in use.

Additionally, 2,049,415 ‘Cat B’ cars – classed having significant damage and not repairable – were found, while 3,889,630 ‘Cat C’ cars suffering reparable damage that exceeds the vehicle’s value were also identified.

Roger Powell divisional head at CDL Vehicle Information Services, said: According to our data, 17.37% of the total vehicle pool are previous write-offs. If you add in ‘outstanding theft’ categories, the number of vehicles with some sort of insurance marker against them leaps to around one in four.'

A recent survey – from the same company – revealed that 21% of respondents would consider buying a previously written-off used car to save money.

Geneva motor show: Toyota FT-Bh
(Wed, 22 Feb 2012 09:55:00 GMT)

More images of the Toyota FT-Bh concept car have been released ahead of its public debut at the Geneva motor show next month.

Toyota has previously revealed a sketch of the new car, but the two new images show more details. One shows the rear light and tailgate, while the other appears to be a close-up of the headlight.

The FT-Bh name stands for Future Toyota B-segment Hybrid. The B-segment part refers to the conventional supermini category that includes cars such as the Ford Fiesta and Volkswagen Polo.

Toyota says the FT-Bh has a ‘downsized’ hybrid powertrain and is built using ‘economically viable methods and materials.’

Despite the FT-Bh having the same dimensions as a full-size supermini, Toyota says the sub-800kg car weighs less than an Aygo 3dr.

Toyota launched an all-new Yaris last year, and a Yaris Hybrid goes on sale in June, so any production model based on the FT-Bh would appear to be some years away.

More details of the FT-Bh concept car will be revealed at the Geneva motor show.

2012 Fiat Panda review
(Wed, 22 Feb 2012 09:37:00 GMT)

The 2012 Fiat Panda is a practical five-door city car that's longer and wider than the model it replaces.

It has a more rounded body than the previous Panda, and that theme continues through to the cabin, where many of the features also have a more rounded look.

Initially, the new Panda will come with three engines and three trims, with prices from £8900 for a 1.2 Pop. You’ll need to stretch to Easy to get remote central locking and air-conditioning, and the range tops off with the diesel-engined 1.3 Multijet Lounge at £12,250.

This brings the promise of more than 70mpg, as well as alloys, electrically adjustable door mirrors and front foglights.

What’s it like to drive? On the road, there’s an endearing and enjoyable quality to the way the Panda drives: it’s easy to manoeuvre in town, mostly smooth-riding and with a mature feel on the open road.

Other than wind noise from around the side windows, the Panda copes well with motorway journeys, while it grips surely and displays balanced handling along the most twisty country roads.

Even the basic 1.2-litre engine gives decent performance around town and will happily cruise at 70mph. Compared with the larger engines, its relatively limited torque is only obvious at higher speeds, where you often need to drop down a gear to cope with the ebb and flow of traffic.

In this respect, the Twinair petrol engine and the 1.3 Multijet diesel are less demanding, and there’s no denying that their performance is stronger all round. However, given how much extra they cost, and that most Pandas will lead a predominantly urban life, the 1.2 makes more sense.

That conclusion is reinforced by the fact that the 1.2 is also the most refined of the three engines. The Twinair unit is particularly noisy in its native environment of stop-start urban traffic, while the Multijet unit is quite noisy when revved.

What’s it like inside? The Panda’s cabin features dials, stereo and ventilation controls that have a more rounded modern look than the previous car's.

There’s a two-tone colour scheme to the upholstery, although it has to be said that some combinations are rather garish. Similarly, the materials aren’t the last word in quality – there are no soft-touch luxuries in here, just hard-wearing plastics – but they are nice and colourful, especially on the upper two trims (Easy and Lounge).

Up front, head- and legroom are decent, and although the cabin is no bigger than in the old car, Fiat says there’s more room because the front seat backs are thinner.

As long as those front seats aren’t slid too far back, a couple of adults will fit in the back; and, while taking four six-footers is a squeeze, the Panda is very practical for a city car. Its boot is a decent size, while also nicely shaped and with a wide opening that makes it easy to use.

Should I buy one? The Panda is a thoroughly endearing small car, so it should certainly be on the shortlist of anyone considering a city car.

We’re not especially taken with versions that use the Multijet or Twinair engines – especially given their price – but the 1.2 Easy (with remote central locking, air-conditioning and a smarter interior than on Pop cars) looks a fine way to get change from £10,000.

New Mercedes SL63 AMG revealed
(Wed, 22 Feb 2012 09:00:00 GMT)

This is the Mercedes SL63 AMG, a range-topping version of the new SL roadster that goes on sale in late summer.

The SL63 AMG comes with 530bhp in standard form, but adding the £10,000 (approx) AMG Performance Pack boosts output to 556bhp.

Power is provided by a 5.5-litre twin-turbocharged ‘Biturbo’ V8 engine that propels the SL63 AMG from 0-62mph in 4.2 seconds with the Performance Pack or 4.3 seconds without.

There's a seven-speed automatic sports gearbox, while the car also gets a speed-sensitive sports steering rack and AMG sports suspension with Active Body Control and comfort and sport settings.

The new SL63 AMG weighs 125kg less than the previous model, thanks, in part, to an aluminium bodyshell.

AMG's makeover also includes 19-inch alloys, performance brakes, and bespoke front and rear bumpers.

Full specification is yet to be confirmed, but options include Mercedes' Magic Sky glass roof, which can switch from opaque to transparent at the touch of a button.

Prices should be confirmed at the Geneva motor show, and are expected to increase slightly on the current car’s £106,820.

Audi RS5 2012 prices revealed
(Tue, 21 Feb 2012 09:40:00 GMT)

The latest Audi RS5 performance model has been launched to complete the 2012 A5 line-up.

The 2012 Audi RS5 gets the same cosmetic enhancements as the rest of the range, including wraparound LED daytime running lights, sharper bonnet contours, a mildly tweaked grille and new front and rear bumpers. In addition, the RS5 comes equipped with new 19-inch alloys.

The interior gains a host of equipment as standard, including Bluetooth, cruise control, DVD satellite-navigation and iPod connectivity, while radar-activated cruise control is a no-cost option. Further changes include a new flat-bottomed steering wheel and detail improvements to the dashboard switchgear.

Under the bonnet, the RS5 remains much the same. The 4.2 V8 delivers 450bhp, with a 0-62mph time of 4.5 seconds. Economy has been marginally improved, with an average of 26.9mpg, while CO2 emissions are reduced by 5g/km to 246g/km.

The revised version includes new electromechanical power steering to improve efficiency, although the seven-speed, dual-clutch transmission with steering wheel-mounted paddles remains the same.

Dynamic Ride Control is no longer standard, but is part of a £2250 Sport Package, which also adds a sports exhaust, Dynamic Steering and 20-inch, titanium-effect alloy wheels.

Prices for the RS5 are unchanged, and start at £58,725. The 2012 RS5 is on sale now, with first deliveries in April.

Toyota Aygo 2012 prices revealed
(Mon, 20 Feb 2012 17:40:00 GMT)

The Toyota Aygo 2012 range will start from £8495. Entry point for the new range is the 1.0 VVT-i 3dr, which costs £95 less than the cheapest model in the current range.

In addition, the revised engine now emits 99g/km of CO2, so buyers will be exempt from the London Congestion Charge. Fuel economy has been improved from an average of 61.4mpg to 65.7mpg.

Two new models – Fire from £9595 and Ice from £9895 – head the range. These are special-edition models, but are expected to be available into 2013.

The sporty ‘Fire’ is available in a Burnt Orange paint finish, with matching side mouldings and interior trim, as well as privacy glass, foglamps and LED daytime running lights. The ‘Ice’ is focused on comfort, and adds DAB radio, air-conditioning, Bluetooth, USB connectivity and leather-and-Alcantara upholstery.

Fire and Ice buyers have the option of an ‘Xtraprotected Pack’, which adds rear parking sensors, mud flaps, carpet mats, rear bumper protection plate and side protection mouldings. A ’Style Pack’ is available for the Ice model, which adds chrome trim, aluminium scuff plates and chrome exhaust pipe; ‘Style+’ adds 14-inch alloys.

Metallic paint and Toyota’s Multimode semi-auto transmission are available for all but the entry-level version.

The 2012 Aygo is a rival for city cars such as the Fiat Panda, Seat Mii and VW Up. It’s closely related to the Citroen C1 and Peugeot 107, which have both been updated for 2012.

Megane Renaultsport 265 from £24,825
(Mon, 20 Feb 2012 15:10:00 GMT)

The new Renault Megane Renaultsport 265 will cost from £24,825 when it goes on sale in early April.

The Megane Renaultsport 265 comes with a ‘Sport’ mode that boosts the default power setting of 247bhp to 261bhp – 14bhp more than the 250 model it replaces. It also changes the exhaust note to provide a more sporty soundtrack.

The extra power shaves a tenth off the 0-62mph sprint, with the 256 taking 6.0 seconds. The top speed is boosted by 2mph to 158mph.

New options include a £350 ‘Red Styling Pack’, which adds red striping on the front blade, rear diffuser and side protection mouldings.

A rear camera and front parking sensors are also available for £360, while a fatigue-detection system adds £300.

Buyers who want the Cup’s firmer suspension can pay £1350 to add it to the more luxurious 265. They'll also get 18-inch black alloys, grooved disc brakes with red calipers, a limited-slip differential and Michelin Sport 2 tyres.

The basic Cup comes with cloth upholstery, while the standard 265 adds leather and electrically powered seat adjustment.

The cars are available to order now, with Cup versions from £24,825, while the standard 265 will start at £26,025.

Geneva motor show: More Fiat 500L photos
(Mon, 20 Feb 2012 14:52:00 GMT)

Fiat has released more pictures of the new Fiat 500L.

The 500L aims to blend improved practicality with enough of the trendy looks that have made the regular Fiat 500 such a hit.

The 500L will be launched at the Geneva motor show, and while it has the iconic three digits on its badging, its size means it has more in common with the Fiat Punto Evo.

It’s 4140mm long, 1780mm wide and 1660mm high, making it 590mm longer, 150mm wider and 170mm higher than a 500. Those dimensions mean it’s longer, wider and taller than the Citroen C3 Picasso.

The new model will be offered with Fiat’s 0.9-litre two-cylinder Twinair engine, a conventional four-cylinder 1.4-litre petrol engine or a 1.3-litre diesel. Transmissions are likely to be either a five-speed manual or Fiat’s Dualogic automated manual.

Fiat has yet to announce any performance figures or official fuel economy stats – or images of the car’s interior – but given that the smaller engine manages to take the Punto Evo down to below 100g/km, we’d expect it to achieve a similar feat here.

The new model shares its name with the 500, but it won’t share its factory in Poland. Instead the 500L will be built at Fiat’s Serbian facility, in Kragujevac.
It’s not due in UK dealerships for a while, either; it won’t go on sale until the start of 2013.

Expect it to carry a premium of around £3000 over the comparable 500; that’ll bring its prices into line with those of its main rivals, including the C3 Picasso.

Breathalysers needed in France from July
(Mon, 20 Feb 2012 12:05:00 GMT)

Anyone driving in France must carry a breathalyser kit from July 1, or face an on-the-spot fine of €11 (around £9.15).

Single-use breathalyser kits cost between £1 and £2, and will be on sale at all ferry and rail terminals. Multiple-use devices are available, and our review of such breathalysers can be found here.

The legal limit for drink-driving in France is 50mg per 100ml of blood, while in the UK it is 80mg per 100ml.

‘The new French rule is a genuine attempt to reduce the number of alcohol-related accidents,’ said IAM director of policy and research Neil Greig. ‘The country's lower limit means it’s very easy to be over the limit the morning after as well.’

Existing laws require all motorists driving in France to carry a warning triangle and a high-visibility vest, while UK drivers must display a ‘GB’ badge and have headlights adjusted for driving on the right.

Geneva 2012: Lancia-badged 4WD Chrysler
(Mon, 20 Feb 2012 11:45:00 GMT)

Lancia will show a four-wheel-drive version of the Thema at the Geneva motor show; the car that will be badged as the Chrysler 300C when it reaches the UK.

The car can automatically enable its four-wheel-drive system during colder periods, or when sensors detect rain or snow.

Four-wheel drive is then switched off when not required, which will improve fuel economy by up to 5%, according to Lancia.

However, it's not certain whether the UK-bound versions – badged as the Chrysler 300C – will come with the system. A UK spokesman said: ‘Never say never. There is no reason why not, but it is yet to be confirmed.’

Also at Geneva is the Lancia Ypsilon, which goes on sale this month, with prices from £12,750.

The manufacturer's display will also include a convertible version of the Lancia Flavia, which will not come to the UK .

Geneva motor show 2012: Mini Clubvan
(Mon, 20 Feb 2012 11:45:00 GMT)

The Mini Clubvan Concept has been revealed ahead of its official debut at the Geneva Motor Show 2012.

The Clubvan is based on the current Clubman, which has been on sale for five years.

The concept car does without the Clubman’s side rear windows, which have been replaced with polycarbonate panels, while the rear door windows have been heavily tinted.

It is strictly a two-seater, and has a bespoke aluminium and stainless steel loadbay partition. The Clubvan's loadbay capacity is expected to be larger than the Clubman’s 920 litres. This is due to the removal of the Clubman's rear seats and false boot floor.

The small, rear-hinged ‘Clubdoor’ behind the driver’s door and side-hinged rear doors are carried forward.

The Clubvan has black-coloured cloth for the side walls, floor and roof lining.

A production Clubvan is expected to appear in showrooms later this year.

Maserati Granturismo Sport unveiled
(Mon, 20 Feb 2012 09:50:00 GMT)

This is the Maserati Granturismo Sport, a new version of the company's high-performance coupe that will make its public debut at the Geneva motor show next month.

The Granturismo Sport has new-look front and rear bumpers, LED headlight details and darkened tail lights. There are new seats and a redesigned steering wheel.

The Granturismo Sport has a 4.7-litre V8 petrol engine that produces 454bhp; that’s 21bhp more than the Granturismo S model it replaces. Maserati hasn’t released any more technical details.

There’s no word on prices yet, although we’d expect a small increase over the Granturismo S, so a starting point of around £94,000 is likely.

Record diesel prices prompt plea
(Fri, 17 Feb 2012 15:53:00 GMT)

Diesel prices have hit a record high and fuel retailers have today called on the Government to investigate 'alleged unfair pricing and predatory pricing tactics' by some supermarkets and oil companies.

The price of diesel is now 143.05 pence per litre, on average, after having rocketed by 10ppl in just 12 months. This puts inflation for diesel at double that of the Consumer Price Index of 3.6%.

In a letter to Chancellor George Osborne, the Retail Motor Industry Federation’s Petrol division informed him that it has asked the Office of Fair Trading to conduct a ‘market study’ into unfair price and competition practices in the road fuels industry.

It argues that such practices are forcing up the price of diesel and forcing up to 300 independent retailers out of business every year.

According to RMI Petrol, today there are just 8500 forecourts in Britain, down from 20,000 in 1990, creating fuel deserts and forcing drivers, particularly in rural areas, to travel for miles to fill up.

‘Consumers and businesses deserve the truth about the costs and pricing of such a vital commodity,’ said Brian Madderson, chair of RMI Petrol. He added: ‘Resolution of unfair price and competition practices could influence retail prices to consumers and provide some cushion against the tide of rising global oil prices.

Madderson also ‘strongly urged’ the Chancellor to ease pressure on motorists by abandoning plans to raise fuel duty by 3.02ppl in August and to consider a further cut. If the planned increase goes ahead, it will add at least 4ppl to the existing price of diesel.

According to the AA, drivers in Northern Ireland are paying most for diesel, with the fuel there averaging 143.5p a litre. The cheapest regions are the North of England, Yorkshire and Humberside, where the average price is 142.3ppl.

Skoda seven-seat SUV on the way
(Fri, 17 Feb 2012 14:35:00 GMT)

Skoda is planning a new seven-seat SUV that will fit above the Yeti in its range.

The new model is viewed internally as a ‘bigger brother’ to the successful Yeti. Skoda is not keen on squeezing an extra pair of seats into its existing SUV to create a Yeti+2, as Nissan has done with the Qashqai.

It is not yet clear what model from the Volkswagen Group the new car would be based on, but Skoda’s board member for sales and marketing, Jurgen Stackmann, appeared to rule out a rival for Volvo’s XC90, saying it was too large.

This could imply an SUV based on the underpinnings of the Superb.

Of the idea of a seven-seat SUV, Stackmann said: ‘There is space for that, it would make perfect sense for us.’

A new model is still some way off, though, and nothing is expected to be revealed for at least two years.

Skoda Citigo GT unlikely
(Fri, 17 Feb 2012 14:35:00 GMT)

Skoda has ruled out the possibility of a faster version of its Citigo, in the style of the Volkswagen Up GT, for the immediate future.

Instead, Skoda will focus on special-edition Skoda Fabia models. ‘We are looking to design vehicles like the Fabia Monte Carlo. The GT editions work for VW, but not so much with us,’ said Stackmann, Skoda board member for sales and marketing.

‘The vRS brand works well with the Octavia, but it is more difficult with the Fabia. We sold 2500 Fabia vRS models last year and 12,500 Monte Carlos.’

However, he insisted that a Monte Carlo model would not get just a few add-ons, saying: ‘It must have integrity, not just be plasticky.’

A Monte Carlo or equivalent version would be some way off, with any model likely to arrive in around two years. In the meantime, the Citigo will offer packages that will add styling details such as stickers and 15-inch alloy wheels.

Skoda Citigo 5dr review
(Fri, 17 Feb 2012 10:28:00 GMT)

The Skoda Citigo is the company's version of the 2012 What Car? Car of the Year, the VW Up.

Just like the VW, the little Skoda is available with either three or five doors, but it’s the five-door version we’re testing here.

It goes on sale on June 1; the same time as the three-door Citigo we’ve already tested.

The Citigo shares almost all of its underpinnings with the VW Up, including the 1.0-litre three-cylinder engine (available with either 59bhp or 74bhp).

However, Skoda has had an influence on the car’s styling – both inside and out.

What’s it like to drive?
Remarkably good. Despite its tiny dimensions, the Citigo rides well over bumps and potholes, feeling as solid and as well damped as a much larger car.

Despite this, the Skoda feels most at home in a town environment. A tight turning circle helps with low-speed manoeuvres, while the light and precise steering makes it easy to negotiate tight parking spots. There’s enough weight to make the car feel stable on the motorway, though.

Out of town, the Citigo never feels fast; the small engines labour on steep inclines and maintaining momentum often requires changing down a gear. The engines are quiet unless you really thrash them, though, and that makes the Citigo a more competent cruiser than many other city cars, such as the Kia Picanto.

All versions are economical, but ‘Greentec’ models add engine stop-start and low rolling resistance tyres to bring the car's CO2 output below 100g/km.

Another big selling point is safety: the Citigo’s optional ‘City Safe Drive’ technology, which uses a laser to scan the road and automatically brake if it senses an obstacle an impending collision – helps prevent low-speed accidents. Pricing for this will be announced at the Geneva motor show.

What’s it like inside?
There isn’t a single piece of soft-touch finish anywhere on the dashboard or door linings, but that doesn’t mean the Citigo feels cheap inside. Instead it’s smart and functional, with an uncluttered instrument panel.

Rear headroom is generous, although legroom isn’t so impressive – especially with tall people in the front.

Thankfully, this five-door version has the same generous 251-litre boot as the three-door model, despite the rejigging of the doors.

Standard-fit items include practical touches such as a hook for handbags (integrated into the glovebox handle) and net pockets on the inside edges of the front seats.

Should I buy one?
The Skoda’s big advantage over its Volkswagen equivalent is price. Given that the five-door Citigo is expected to cost £7950 (£425 less than the entry-level VW) it makes a very compelling case.

Yes, the three-door version is even cheaper still, but given the tiny £350 premium this five-door model attracts, it’s our pick of the Citigo range.
